D'Arcy has class, and Catholic in spades.
I grew up in Goshen, IN. I graduated from Marian HS in Mishewaka, IN. Home turf is the Fort Wayne - South Bend diocese, and I've always been a fan of Bishop John M. D'Arcy. Every time I hear about the way he has handled an issue, every time I read the wording of statements he has made, I am reassured that this man is a good bishop.
Take for instance: He provided private pastoral advice until Fr. Jenkins did a bunch of stupid public stuff that D'Arcy had to publicly whack him for in order to keep the real Catholic teaching from being any more damaged. And even then, D'Arcy released only the points of his letter to Fr. Jenkins that were relevant to the Catholic population at large and not anything that would be unnecessarily damaging or embarrassing to Fr. Jenkins. (Getting the canonical smack-down from a bishop is plenty embarrassing, but necessary.) At the same time, D'Arcy has been trying to keep the -- possibly a wee bit too bloodthirsty -- scandalized Catholics in a prayerful and peaceful frame of mind while they protest Fr. Jenkins mis-steps.
Acting in loving leadership to all parties and working to bring all the diocese to Christ, that's the stuff!
